Dry Needling and How It Works
Dry needling—also known as intramuscular stimulation (IMS)—is a technique used in physiotherapy to address muscle and joint concerns linked to pain, tension, and movement restrictions. When tissues become irritated or stressed, nearby muscles often tighten as a protective response. This tightening can limit circulation and contribute to ongoing discomfort or reduced mobility.
During dry needling, thin, sterile needles are placed into areas of muscle tightness, connective tissue, or near sensitive nerve pathways. This process encourages the muscle to relax, helps reduce excessive tension, and supports improved local circulation. When applied to trigger points or areas of dysfunction, dry needling may assist in easing muscle banding, improving movement, and supporting more comfortable range of motion.
What Can I Expect From a Dry Needling Session?
At your first visit, your physiotherapist will review your health history and perform a physical assessment to determine whether dry needling is appropriate for you. The technique will be explained clearly, and you’ll have the opportunity to ask questions before treatment begins.
The dry needling portion of a session typically lasts 10 to 15 minutes, though your overall appointment may be up to 45 minutes. This is because dry needling is often combined with other physiotherapy approaches, such as movement-based exercises or hands-on techniques, to support your overall treatment plan.
